10 Facebook Tips For Brands by @randizuckerberg

I am attending the iStrategy conference in Amsterdam today and wanted to share these 10 Facebook tips that Randi Zuckerberg (@RandiZuckerberg) talked about in her keynote today:

  1. Give people a reason to "like" - the days of the "easy like" are over
  2. Delight customers by featuring them (fan of the day/week/month)
  3. Give businesses a human face (how is it like to be an employee)
  4. Detailed insights help you tailor your message - track keywords related conversations
  5. Stay timely and relevant and funny too! (Twice as engaging if timed right)
  6. Crowd-sourcing (Target=where to donate, VitaminWater=name botten and design)
  7. New e-commerce options (purchase online, shops, gifting)
  8. Using social media as a customer service channel - "Twitter is especially useful"
  9. Real-time interaction (Burberry posted a pic of the model just before she went on the runway)
  10. A beautiful mobile experience (focus on the one aspect they do on the go)

Also check out this blog post that has pictures of the slides.

And, while you're at it, also read the blog post on the iStrategy blog.

  • Nobody cares about your email as much as you do. I know that’s a hard pill to swallow given all the love and attention you put into making your emails great. But it’s true. People aren’t looking for reasons to open your emails. They’re looking for reasons to delete them.

Presenting at the first Russian Email Marketing Conference ever

On October 11th, Kath Pay and myself spoke at the first ever Russian Email Marketing Conference, which took place on a boat that sailed from St Petersburg to Tallinn to Stockholm and then back to St Petersburg.

Kath and I boarded the Princess Anastasia in Tallinn to avoid needing a visa to enter Russia and presented on day 2 of the conference.

It was a fun but weird experience talking email marketing best practices on a rocky boat while having every sentence translated by an interpreter. But I would definitely do it again! The audience and organizers were absolutely fantastic!

Email Still King Of ROI At $40.56 For Every $1 Spent (DMA)

Once again, commercial email is returning vastly more for every dollar spent on it this year than every other marketing channel, according to the Direct Marketing Association’s just-released Power of Direct economic impact study.

Email is bringing in $40.56 for every dollar spent on it this year, according to the DMA. This is compared to catalogs’ ROI of $7.30, search’s return of $22.24, Internet display advertising’s return of $19.72 and mobile’s return of $10.51.

Commercial email is expected to drive $63.1 billion in sales this year, compared to $57.8 billion last year, according to the study.

The DMA projects email to drive $67.8 billion in sales in 2012 and $82.2 billion in sales in 2016.

How Many Fields Should Your Forms Have?

The folks over at Eloqua analyzed data from 1500 forms over the last 3 months and found, as I expected, that the less fields asked, the less friction for submission.

COTW+Vol+22+2011-09-30

Of course, not all forms serve the same purpose:

  • forms offering a trial: max 8 fields
  • forms offering a download: max 11 fields
  • webinar event registration forms: max 5 fields
