On Holidays until September 26th

Last Friday was my last day at eBay. I will start my new job on October 1st (I'll tell you a bit more about this new job very soon).

I think I'm going to be extremely busy in the next couple of months, so I thought now would be a good time to go on holidays :) Until September 26th, I'll be traveling around Tunesia.

To stay updated on what's going on in the email marketing industry while I'm gone, I highly recommend Mark Brownlow's No Man Is an Iland blog.

I'm off to pack my suitcase now! Talk to you soon!

Full Text in RSS Feed

If you are reading this post in your RSS reader you have noticed already: I've switched from publishing only partial text in my RSS feed to publishing the full text of the post. Many of you have asked me to do this for a long time but I was always very hesitant about it. I was afraid I would see a drop in actual visits to my blog.

But it seems that I should not be too worried about that. Early data shows that traffic is actually increasing rather than dropping. And this is being confirmed by an article I read this morning (found it via Kris Hoet's del.icio.us feed on Facebook - I know, I know, I'm an infojunkie!): Why Full Text Feeds Actually Increase Page Views (The Freakonomics Explanation)

So I humbly apologize for not doing it much sooner!

If there's anything else I can do to make reading this blog easier for you or if you have any suggestions to enhance the user experience on this blog, please let me know!

There's a War Going On!

The bidding war is raging! It seems that there are 3 parties that are competing for the right to post their banner on my blog for 1 month. The auction has had 138 page views so far and Mel-Black-Widow is the highest bidder right now with $81 and he/she seems eager to win :)

There are only a couple more hours to go (the auction ends today at 11.15am PDT / 2.15pm EST / 8.15pm CET) and I find myself refreshing the page all the time - it's sooo addictive! I will be at the airport at the time the auction ends, so let's hope I can log on to the wireless network in the last few minutes of the auction, because that's when the bidding usually goes crazy! :)

Email Marketer's Club: What's Going On?

On May 24th I started the Email Marketer's Club, a social network for email marketers across the globe. The idea was to create a place for like-minded people to socialize, discuss problems and opportunities and share ideas and experiences.

Today the club has 86 members from all continents (except Africa) and it's a nice mix of corporate email marketers and vendor/agency-side people. Members can post messages on the forum, write their own blog posts, send private messages to each other, create their own little subgroups (eg. email service providers, Belgian email marketers...) and lots more.

New members are joining every day, so make sure to drop by and join the conversation!

Selling Ad Space to the Highest Bidder

I frequently get requests from advertisers that would like to advertise their services on my blog. However, I have no idea what to charge for a banner. So I decided to do what we recommend our professional eBay sellers to do: I will list the ad space on eBay and see what advertisers are willing to pay for it.

So, if you are interested in placing a 468x60 horizontal banner on my blog for 1 month*, go ahead and place your bid on eBay now! The only requirement that I have for this banner is that it has to be email marketing related. I do not accept banners that are off-topic for this ad placement.

Some statistics: this blog has approximately 3,500 monthly unique visitors and 8,500 monthly page views.

Bidding starts from $1. Bid now!

This feels like I'm writing the copy for an eBay email campaign :)

*The banner will be placed in the top left corner on the homepage of this blog (right below the navigation bar and right above the first post). If you have any questions regarding this auction, let me know!

The Email Marketers' Club welcomes its 20th member!

About a month ago I found this tool called Ning which allows you to create your own social network. Of course I couldn't resist trying it out, so I created a community called the The Email Marketers' Club.

The club welcomed its 20th member today and we're looking for more people to come join the fun! Want to be part of this community and network with email marketers across the globe too? Join now!

Some Design Tweaks and Other Changes

After upgrading to a Pro account with Typepad, I made some changes to the appearance and the way information is displayed on this blog. Here's an overview:

- I added a discussion board aka forum and hope it will make my blog a bit more interactive.
- I tweaked the category (view sample) and monthly archive pages (view sample) to make it easier for you to find what you're looking for. These pages now only show the title of each post and the first 50 words.
- After blogging for over 2 years, I finally decided to give my blog a real name (see header).
- I updated my About page and created a couple more pages - you can find them in the new horizontal navigation bar.

I'm done changing for the day, but if you have any suggestions for further improvements to this blog, please post them here.

Just Added a Forum to this Blog. Help Me Test It!

I'm not only a gadget-freak (when is the iPhone being released in Europe???) but you might have noticed that I'm also a widget-freak :)

So when I read this post on typepadhacks.org on how to add a forum to your Typepad blog, I wanted to give it a try.

I created a new page for my brand new forum and would like you to help me test it out. Let me know (by posting a message on the forum) if you like it, if you think it's useful, if you need more categories, if there's anything that could improve it etc. Your help and input is greatly appreciated!

For the time being anyone can post a message, but I might change that to members only if I get too much spam posts on it.

Try it out here: www.b2bemailmarketing.com/forum.html

A Little Update On What's Going On

Here I am again. My first post after the Email Summit - which was very interesting by the way. More about that later. Let me first apologize for not posting the last couple of weeks. After the summit I spend a lovely couple of days in the US, visiting Miami Beach and New York. I guess I would have enjoyed New York a lot more if 1) if would have been smart enough to listen to my friend Beate and put some sunscreen on my body before going for a walk at Miami Beach (I looked very much like a boiled lobster for about a week) and 2) if it weren't so cold in New York! :-) But I met A LOT of very interesting people, and that made all of that worthwile :)

The week after my trip to the US, the only thing I wanted to do in the evenings was sleep, sleep, sleep (I hate jetlag!) and last week was all about planning for Q2 at work. I've also been elected to be part of an international team that wants to bring email marketing to the next level at our company (which is badly needed!), so there are great challenges ahead and I'm very much looking forward to that.

This morning I received an email from Norito, one of my Asian readers. He told me he likes my blog very much and asked me to please continue to keep it up-to-date. Thanks for giving me that little push that I needed to start blogging again, Norito-san. I've missed it!

In my next two posts I will give you my notes from MarketingSherpa's Email Summit and an overview of the most interesting articles that were published in the last couple of weeks. As from then, it's back to normal posting behaviour :-)

By the way, I now have 45 responses to my reader survey. My goal is to reach at least 100, so if you haven't responded yet, please do so now! I promise to give you the results as soon as I reach 100.

It's Been A Busy Couple Of Weeks...

I haven't been posting the last couple of weeks and that's basically because I've been too busy travelling and making up for it by spending some quality time with Wim, my partner in life.

On the work front I've been busy creating our very first outsourced email campaign - and it's been a great experience so far. I can't stress enough that when you decide to outsource your email campaigns to an agency, you should chose an agency that has proven experience with email marketing. They need to know the specifics of designing and writing copy for email rather than for print or the web.

Last week I gave a presentation at an email marketing conference in Stockholm which was organized by DF Kompetens and L-Soft. It was the first time I spoke at a public event and I loved it! I love sharing knowledge and helping other people but I've always been afraid of actually standing in front of an audience of total strangers and talk about it. But it was great! The audience was great and they asked a lot of questions, the other speakers were very inspiring and Stockholm is a lovely city! Many thanks to Outi, David, Eric and the others for inviting me!

I'd love to do this more often, so if you're organizing an email marketing event and you want someone to come and talk about email marketing, let me know! :)

I'm on a plane to the US as I'm writing this, so I have plenty of time to go through the hundreds of unread emails in my mailbox. Most of them are newsletters about email marketing and other internet marketing related subjects. Instead of writing a dozen of new posts, I'll give you an overview of the most interesting articles in a separate post.

As I said, I'm on a plane to the US where I will be attending MarketingSherpa's Email Summit in Miami on Monday and Tuesday. So look out for some interesting learnings over the next couple of days. Actually, the nice folks at Citrix will be hosting a web seminar next Friday where they will share some of the learnings, you might want to sign up for it. I'll be in New York on Friday, and if my hotel room has an internet connection I'll try to attend as well!

On another note, I have received about 30 responses to my reader survey. The responses I received so far are very insightful and I will share them with you soon.

One thing that seems to be coming back is this: you want me to write more about my own experiences and/or give my own perspective to the articles that I post. Well, it's never really been the intention of this blog to do this - I already spend so many hours just reading and posting the best articles I read, I just don't have the time to add more of my own perspective for the time being. But I will definitely keep it in mind and I will try to do it when time permits!

Many thanks to those that have already completed my survey! If you haven't filled it out yet, please do so now! Ideally I'd love to get at least 100 responses from you...

Well, that's it for now. I'm looking forward to spending an interesting week in the States, mixing both business and pleasure. If you happen to be at the Email Summit, please come and say hi - I'll be at the eec networking meeting on Sunday as well as the Email Roundtable networking event on Monday. On Wednesday you'll find me sightseeing in the Everglades and from Thursday to Saturday I'll be in New York.

Change of email service

For those of you that have subscribed to receive an email notification each time I've posted something on my blog, I would like to let you know that I've switched to a new service called Feedblitz. You don't need to do anything to convert your subscription over.  Just be aware that the emails will now be coming from a different source.

Thanks, and let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Tamara

New Look

I spent most of my time yesterday night to create a new look for my blog. I felt I needed a 3-column layout rather than the standard 2-column layout that Blogger is offering with its templates. Mainly because I'd like to add a list of books which I recommend that you read. I hope to have this list added tonight, so stay tuned!

I'm very interested to hear what you think about the new look and feel. And please let me know if you notice anything that is not working properly.

Cheers!
