Email Insider Summit

Today is day 2 of the Email Insider Summit in Florida. So far it's been absolutely fantastic! The sessions yesterday were extremely interesting, the speakers are well-chosen (well done Stephanie!), the networking is great and the location is fabulous :)

Compared to an email summit I attended last March, this one is a completely different league. Coming back from the one in March, I didn't really feel I learned or heard something new. After day 1 of the Email Insider Summit, I feel so excited about all the stuff that I've been hearing about - not only from the speakers, but also from talking with other attendants.

I'm making lots of notes, and hope to post them soon. In the meanwhile, check out the summit blog to read what's going on.

I'm sitting on a panel on Saturday morning that will talk about how to go international with your email program. It's going to be fun! Talk to you soon!

My Next Two Speaking Gigs

It looks like I'll be travelling again soon. I've accepted to sit on a panel together with IBM's Syd Jones and Ogilvy's Skip Fidura on the last day of the Email Insider Summit. We will be discussing how to go global with your email program.

A couple of days later (on May 15th) I will be presenting an eBay case study at the Email Marketing for the Real World conference in London. Hope I'm not going to be too jetlagged ;)

Let me know if you're planning to attend either of these events, I'd love to meet up!

Email Insider Summit, May 9-12

As Justin Foster writes on his blog: "It's cool. It's new. It's hip. It's in Florida. I'm convinced it may be the most neat-o skaleet-o thing to happen to the world of email marketing since the invention of the open tracking pixel.  OK, well, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but not by much. If you have a career that touches email marketing, You NEED to BE THERE."

I'm going, what about you?

W3C HTML Mail Workshop in Paris Next Month

W3C is holding a Workshop to discuss HTML in email on May 24 in Paris, France. As Mathew says on his blog:

"This is a significant event, because it shows that the people involved in formulating and setting web standards recognize that HTML in email is worthy of more time and effort than it has received in the past. It's great news for everyone who has been frustrated by inconsistent support for html in email clients, and is tired of explaining that html can actually improve the experience for people receiving email if done right."

The W3C would like to hear from direct marketers, online retailers and companies using HTML emails
as their default format, to gather requirements, hear triumphs and horror stories, and prioritize plans for future technical work.

Position papers will be the basis for discussions at the Workshop. Accepted papers will be made publicly available.

Candidate Topics for Position Papers are:

  • Why HTML email is mandatory for newsletters and ads
  • Good and bad stories from direct marketers and online retailers
  • Interoperability problems in mail user agents
  • Editing HTML content for email
  • What needs to be done to have JavaScript enabled in email ?
  • Browsing and Authoring "Decorative mail services" on Mobile phone in Japan
  • etc.

Presenters will be asked to make the slides of the presentation available on the workshop home page in HTML, or plain text.

Position papers must be submitted via email to HTML mail public list no later than 21 April 2007. Early submissions are appreciated.

The Workshop is free, and open to both W3C Members and to non-members.

Notes from MarketingSherpa's Email Summit

Below you can find my notes from MarketingSherpa's Email Summit along with some stuff I noted down when I was reading a bunch of white papers and studies on the plane home. I hope you find it useful!

General Guidelines

  • The average person receives 133 emails per day (US)
  • Make every communication count!
  • Don’t follow best practices blindly => test!
  • Your welcome message is the most impactful (highest open & click-through rates - take advantage of this “emotional moment” when recipients feel most connected & engaged) with your brand
  • Make sure you have a formalized content strategy - written down!
  • Set up an email best practices newsletter (Benchmark countries against each other (eg best conversion), Share learnings & best practices)
  • Keep your emails below 75KB maximum (Preferred size: 35 KB)

What Makes People Open and Read Email?

Return Path's Third Annual Holiday Survey found once again that subscribers love email, they even want more email. But they don't make time for email that isn't relevant.

What makes people open and read email? According to the survey the top factor is "prior value" - that a previous email had been interesting to them. Email is not a series of transactions, it's a relationship.

Sign up for this free webinar to hear Return Path's Stephanie Miller explain the results of the survey. She'll offer practical ideas for improving your own subscriber experience – which is key to driving higher response, more revenue and better customer engagement.

She'll be joined by a panel of top-tier marketers talking about how the survey results compare with their results this holiday season.

Date: Wednesday, February 21st
Time: 2pm ET / 1pm CT / 12pm MT / 11am PT / 8pm CET

Becoming A Member Of The EEC

Eec_certseal_grey_highres69 There. I've done it. I'm now officially a member of the eec! The eec (email experience council) is a global professional organization that strives to enhance the image of email marketing and communications, while celebrating and actively advocating its critical importance in business, and its ROI value.

Being a member means I now have access to all their reports - for free. I can also participate in their roundtables on topics such as deliverability and rendering, list growth and engagement, developing "web standards" for email and lots more...

If you interested in joining the EEC as well, click here.

MarketingSherpa's Email Marketing Summit: Who Wants To Join Me?

Yesterday night I registered for MarketingSherpa's Email Marketing Summit in Miami on March 4-6th. If any of you will attend this event, let me know, I'd love to meet you!

I still have to find a decent hotel room -- preferably one that costs less than $150 and comes without bugs ;-) so if anyone has a good recommendation, let me know as well!

There are 3 Belgians attending the summit (as far as I know), so if you're from Belgium (or the Netherlands) and you're going to the summit, let's hook up.

Tip: both the EEC and the Email Roundtable discussion group are organizing private meetings for their members at the Summit so you can do some networking! I still need to sign up for an EEC membership, need to make a note of that...

Email me at tamara [at] b2bemailmarketing [dot] com or leave a comment to this post. I'd love to hear from you!
