The first line read: “He saw a carrot and had to grab it.” Before generating its response, Claude had already inferred that a rhyme was expected. It connected “carrot” and “grab it,” and internally surfaced the word “rabbit” as a logical, rhyming fit. It then wrote: “His hunger was like a starving rabbit.”
The researchers then intervened. They muted the concept of “rabbit” in Claude’s internal planning and asked it to complete the line again. This time, the model responded: “His hunger was a powerful habit.”
This isn’t just a parlor trick. It’s a powerful demonstration that Claude doesn’t merely autocomplete based on the last few words, it actually engages in internal planning. And when that plan is gently nudged, its output changes meaningfully and contextually.
This is a crucial insight: Claude didn’t just swap words. It restructured its reasoning process based on a change in internal context. And that’s a big leap from randomness to reason.
The implications are massive. For the first time, we can see the early signs of AI making decisions based on structured intent, not just statistical prediction. It’s as though we’re being handed a blueprint of the model’s inner logic.
