New Research Shows How Enterprises Are Actually Using Gen AI in 2024
In my previous posts, we’ve explored various aspects of AI integration in business. Today, I want to share some fascinating insights from a new report by AI at Wharton and GBK Collective that reveals how enterprises are navigating the early years of generative AI.
The research shows a dramatic surge in Gen AI adoption, with 72% of decision-makers now using it weekly, compared to just 37% in 2023. Even areas that were lagging last year – Marketing, Operations, and HR – have seen significant uptake.
What’s particularly interesting is how attitudes have evolved. The initial amazement and curiosity have given way to more practical sentiments. Decision-makers are now more likely to feel “pleased,” “excited,” and “optimistic” about Gen AI. They’re also less worried about it replacing jobs, with 90% seeing it as enhancing employee skills rather than replacing them.
However, companies are still figuring out Gen AI’s true potential. While it performs well in specific tasks like data analysis, brainstorming, and legal contract generation, most functions don’t yet consider it “highly impactful.” The exception is IT, where 58% report a strong impact.
Investment patterns tell an interesting story too. While 72% of enterprises plan to increase their Gen AI budgets next year, most expect slower growth rates of 1-10%. This suggests a shift from initial excitement to a more measured approach focused on proving ROI.
Organizations are adapting structurally, with 46% now having Chief AI Officers. Interestingly, smaller companies (revenue $50M-$250M) show the highest adoption rates at 80%, possibly due to greater agility in implementing new technologies.
A particularly noteworthy finding is the lack of uniform usage policies. About half of enterprises have few or no restrictions on Gen AI use, though larger organizations tend to implement more controls. This suggests we’re still in the early stages of establishing governance frameworks.
In terms of market leadership, while Microsoft and Google continue to dominate, the field remains dynamic. OpenAI and AWS are gaining ground, indicating that the race for AI supremacy is far from over.
The key takeaway? We’re entering a new phase of Gen AI adoption – one where the focus is shifting from experimentation to finding sustainable, ROI-driven implementations. Success will depend on identifying scalable use cases and building organizational structures that can effectively leverage this technology.
