AI, Email Marketing, Motorcycles and Life Lessons: My Conversation with Joi Brooks
I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Joi Brooks for her “Email and Coffee” podcast. We had a wide-ranging conversation about AI, email marketing, and even touched on my passion for motorcycles. Here are some highlights from our chat.
The AI Revolution in Marketing
One of the main topics we discussed was the rapidly evolving world of AI and its impact on marketing. I shared my journey of becoming “addicted” to AI tools over the past year, particularly in how they can enhance our day-to-day life.
A key point I emphasized was the importance of learning how to effectively use AI tools like ChatGPT. It’s not just about asking a question and getting an answer – it’s about learning to “prompt” these tools effectively. As I mentioned to Joi, “The better you are at explaining to people how to do things, the better you will be at using these AI tools.”
AI as a Collaborative Partner
Throughout our conversation, I stressed that AI isn’t here to replace human creativity, but to augment it. I shared how I use ChatGPT as a brainstorming partner, a writing assistant, and even as a tool for rehearsing difficult conversations.
One example I gave was using AI to create custom GPTs (like a personal coach or a marketing strategist) tailored to specific needs. This approach transforms AI from a generic tool into a specialized assistant that understands your unique context and goals.
The Importance of Continuous Learning
We also discussed the rapid pace of AI development and the need for marketers to stay informed and adaptable. I shared my own experience of taking online courses, subscribing to podcasts and dedicated newsletters and experimenting with different AI tools to stay ahead of the curve.
As I told Joi, “The most important thing that you and I and everyone else can do is to learn how these things work, to be on top of it, to understand what are the things it can and cannot do and how to leverage it in our job to actually provide even more value than we’re providing today.”
Looking to the Future
While we acknowledged some of the concerns surrounding AI, our conversation maintained an optimistic tone about its potential. We explored how AI could transform various industries, from marketing to legal and medical fields.
Beyond AI: The Joy of Motorcycles
In a fun detour, Joi and I chatted about my passion for motorcycles. I shared stories about my collection of bikes and the thrill of riding. This part of our conversation underscored an important point – while AI and technology are transforming our work lives, it’s crucial to maintain hobbies and passions that bring us joy outside of our professional spheres.
